Why the name Sairecabur?

Sairecabur is a volcano in the driest desert in the world. The mountain is located on the boarder of Chile and Bolivia, close to the Chilean town of San Pedro de Atacama. The Atacama Desert is a unique place in the world and the volcano Sairecabur guards over it with its summit on 6000 meters altitude. Climbing this volcano is an unique experience. The lack of oxygen at that level is tremendous, the steepness is fair, the view amazing and the satisfaction of reaching the summit is unbelievable. Every day a group of climbers make it to the summit and honour the Inca gods to thanks them for a successful climb and pray for a safe return.

I climbed the volcano myself successfully, which is literally and figuratively one of the highlights in my life. The hike and safe return represents values I find important:

  • Go beyond your limits to reach your goal when needed
  • Finish what you start
  • Respect each other and the environment
